If it were me, I'd just delete all of Kottke's accounts and then quit. Ha.

$124k needed to buy a home in sf bay area (sfgate)
"[A]n income of about $124,000 was needed to purchase a median-priced $560,240 home in the Bay Area in 2003. That's $47,400 higher than the $76,600 median household income in the Oakland metropolitan area and $32,500 higher than the San Francisco metropolitan area's median income of $91,500."

A minimum wage earner in San Francisco would have to work 160 hours a week to afford a median one bedroom apartment.

For reference, California's three-year average median income in 2002 was $48,113 (US Census), and the national median income in 2002 was $42,409 (US Census). So even though San Francisco's median income is more than double the national median, it's still not enough.

How depressing is that?

the unwritten rules of hockey fighting (espn)
There's a code of ethics for hockey fights, unsuprisingly.

sony clie video recorder
Watch TV on your Clie handheld? Pretty cool. Sony adds yet more functionality (though at a steep price) to their Palm-based handhelds. I could definitely see myself recording PTI and South Park to watch during my commute to work.

champagne chair entries (dwr)
These chairs are great. The contest was to make a chair using the materials from two champagne corks and cages. Constraints = creativity.

Hockey's Gap-Toothed Grin Fades Into the Past (nyt)
An interesting look at dentistry in the NHL, the increasing use of mouth guards, and why players get their teeth fixed quicker now.

On that last point, Matthew Barnaby (enforcer for the Penguins and Rangers) says, "Our wives don't want us to look like idiots for that long."

Kodak to stop selling traditional cameras in us, canada, europe (nyt)
"With sales of digital cameras poised to overtake film cameras for the first time this year, Kodak is redefining itself in an effort to keep pace."

Last year Kodak stopped making slide projectors. Super 8 film choices were reduced to two or three ages ago. They are definitely moving towards digital, in the West at least. Good news for Ofoto.

a nice ad reinhart quote re: painting.

it's worth noting that it is in fact very difficult to make a monochrome painting using brushes. try it sometime.

what happened with the a-rod deal (boston.com)
"This trade failed to happen, even though nearly all of the principals were in agreement it was a good thing: Rodriguez, the Red Sox, the Rangers, baseball commissioner Bud Selig, and the union. During the negotiations, the futures of five All-Star players were in limbo, as another trade, one in which the Red Sox would have sent Nomar Garciaparra and relief pitcher Scott Williamson to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Magglio Ordonez, was kept on hold, a no-go if Ramirez and Rodriguez did not switch teams."
