panic room reviewed (nyt)
"'Panic Room' is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). It has many scenes of graphic violence, some of it directed at the walls and windows of a beautiful old house."

hong kong's bamboo scaffolding (nyt)
"Lord [Norman] Foster recalls doing a double take when he saw his [Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank tower] under construction: for all its Buck Rogers modernism, it was erected with bamboo. 'It's difficult to think of a design concept that has needed less improvement over time,' he said."
The bamboo scaffolding surrounding skyscrapers nuder construction was the thing that really struck me in Hong Kong. It was the most visible difference in how things get done; it's a thousand-year old traditional form, taken into the 21st century with aplomb.
It is another illustration of how a culture can bring its traditions along for the modernization ride.

the tournament of woe is me coaches (espn)
"They should wake up every morning grateful for these lives, but it doesn't seem like they do. The world is crashing down on them, and they want your support. They want ticker-tape parades walking in to work. Worst of all, it sometimes seems as if they think they're owed it."
This is another one of those life lessons. Especially for dotcom survivors. For them, this paragraph might read as follows:
"They should wake up every morning grateful for these lives, but it doesn't seem like they do. The world is crashing down on them, and they want your support. They want six figure salaries just for walking in to work. Worst of all, it sometimes seems as if they think they're owed it."
Almost the same.

saku koivu (espn magazine)
"Late in the afternoon before Opening Night in Montreal, Saku got dressed. He wanted to open the season in front of his city, not in bed. Bald and pasty white, he threw on his red, blue and white jersey and drove to the Molson Centre. As the house lights went down and his name boomed over the PA system, 21,273 fans rose to their feet, players on both sides clanged their sticks -- and the place came to life. For seven minutes, they refused to let him out of the light. Koivu bit his lip, bounced from foot to foot, eyes watering. That night, the Habs rallied to tie bitter rival Toronto."
I am hoping that Koivu comes back strong.

winona not caught shoplifting on tape (la times)
"The tape seems to prove one thing: In shopping, as in other pursuits, the famous are different from everyone else. Ryder is never seen in line at a cash register, even though she used her Visa card to charge thousands of dollars worth of merchandise before she was stopped outside the store and accused of shoplifting."

the subway-riding pigeons of far rockaway (nyt)
"A little more than a year ago, a motorman and a conductor on the A line, which terminates at the Far Rockaway station, swore to this reporter that it was true. They said it was common knowledge among longtime riders and those who worked on the line. Pigeons, they said, would board the trains at the outdoor terminal and step off casually at the next station down the line, Beach 25th Street, as if they were heading south but were too lazy, or too fat, to fly."
