why the boston expos will be better than the boston red sox (espn)
"6. 'Le Monstre Vert' much more cosmopolitan than 'The Green Monster.'"

forgiveness, at last, for bill buckner (espn)
"Today, it's assumed Billy Buck squandered the '86 Series himself. Only one problem: He didn't... Only after 16 pitches failed to clinch the game -- and only then -- did the cruel spotlight find him, following a lazy grounder that skipped along like a rabbit in a cornfield."
Boston fans are perhaps the cruelest of all. It's time for the region to get over it: the Yankees are better, the title drought isn't Buckner's fault, and the Bruins and Celtics are just mismanaged. Which is too bad, because the fans here are really into their hometown teams.

the sniper (nyt special section)
With all of the media coverage of this psychotic sniper, you might think there might be some mention of gun control, or mandatory registration, or restrictions on hunting rifles, or anything. But you would be wrong.

House II reborn (nyt)
An interesting story of what happens when a maverick architect (Peter Eisenman) convinces his clients to build an unlivable (for them) house, and then they move out and the house sits abandoned for years, only to be lovingly restored by a new owner. (It sounds a little bit like the story of Villa Savoye, doesn't it?)
Eisenman says something that illustrates the mismatch between client and architect: "I don't design houses with the nuclear family idea because I don't believe in it as a concept. I was interested in doing architecture, not in solving the Falks' privacy problems."
Moral: make sure your designer/architect/creative type is well-matched to your tastes, needs, and desires.
