$8 bet wins $2.7 million! (espn)
"Along with his $2,687,611.60 winning payoff, the bettor also won two of the 48 consolation payoffs, each worth $18,663.80. His total haul, before taxes, was $2,724,939.20."

Wow! Not bad for an eight dollar bet on the Breeders Cup.

todd oldham's loft (ny mag)
I love that he (and his assistants, natch) built most of the stuff in his place. Especially the 2x4 picture shelves. I need some of those.

yamaha musiccast
I can't wait for this to come down in price. Upgrade the hard drive to 250GB and you'd really have something. I'd really like to see B&O do something more like this with their Beo Sound 2000 form factor; the Beo Sound 3200 just doesn't do it for me. Anpother cool thing would be for the Beo Sound 2000 to have an iPod slot where the tape deck currently is, so you could just use an iPod for the hard drive.

tiny pcs (nyt)
Some great homebuilt machines using the Mini ITX motherboard. It's perhaps the best way to convert those Macintosh cube cases into something a bit more useful. Actually, I still don't understand why more companies haven't come out with small machines.

the farnsworth house (nyt)
"In a sense, the Farnsworth House has become less a device for living and more a device for making people think about the ways we choose to live. It reframes the assumptions implicit in the tract houses marching toward Plano, forcing us to reconsider the intimate presence of nature. It confronts us with a thought experiment, and an exquisitely imagined one at that."

I thought that the Farnsworth House was beautifully detailed, and nicely sited, but it didn't feel like 2000 square feet to me; it felt almost cramped. But the glass house as a typology still holds a lot of intellectual appeal, even though now that I own art I'm much more interested in light than sheer glass.
