big heroes, big polaroids (nyt)
"The [world's largest Polaroid] camera, as large as a one-car garage and the only one in the world, was made in the 1970's by Dr. Edwin Land, the founder of Polaroid. It was moved to a studio in the East Village in 1999 by its owner, Gregory Colbert, a French art photographer. Because the picture is the same size as the subject, the image is uncommonly clear. It is also one of a kind because it has no negative. Each photo costs about $300 to make."

I've seen Chuck Close's big Polaroids, but they're nothing near as big as these: 4 by 8 feet. That's a slab of plywood!
