san francisco is my favorite market (onion)
"Its residents sure think so. The people of San Francisco are a culturally and ethnically diverse customer base of 800,000 who hail from virtually every demographic you can name. From the middle-class leanings of the Mission District to the upper-mid conspicuous-consumption, alternative-lifestyle Castro to the shabby-chic stylings of the Presidio's catalog-order set, San Francisco is home to every type of consumer under the sun. And, as you'd expect from a market that both Mark Twain and Jerry Garcia called home, almost every person there is a unique character who marches to the beat of a different drummer. It's true what they say: There's no such thing as a median San Franciscan."

prada's fortunes falling? (nyt)
"In an introduction to a specially published book documenting Mr. Koolhaas's architectural collaborations with Prada, he offers what could be read as an analysis of the philosophical problems underlying Prada's growing pains. 'In a world where everything is shopping . . . and shopping is everything . . . what is luxury?' Mr. Koolhaas asks.
"'Luxury is not shopping,' Mr. Koolhaas concludes."

9/11 first hand (metropolis)
"The current talk concerning the architectural, 'What next?' is like shopping the personal ads while at your spouse's wake. But this is my personal dilemma, my private obstacle to a good night's sleep."
This account of leaving 82 West is harrowing. It brings back everything I was feeling in the aftermath of that day. Sometimes I feel like things are normal, but then I'm reminded of how much has changed, that those towers and those people are still gone, and are not coming back.

the tower builder (new yorker)
"Your words do much to abate the fire that writhes inside
It is hard
But that I had done a bit more...
Had the towers stood up for just one minute longer...
It is hard."
I read this on the T home last night. It was really moving, especially as I was just in midtown on Tuesday.

wear your phone number
this is pretty cool; a lot easier to deal with than that scandanavian clothing line with the anonymous numbers. even though it's basically asking for trouble.

"it" = "ginger" = "segway" (nyt)
Oh man, this thing is cool. Start with the name: Segway. Make it phoenetic, so people don't get tongue-tied over "segue". Then look at the balancing mechanism and the efficiency of the battery. If urban planning could catch up to it, cities would be so much cooler.
That, and everyone is my office is already talking about it. It'll be on my Amazon wishlist.
